Why D2 2379 is best suited for wear resistant tooling?

D2 2379 is a high Chromium, high Carbon tool steel which is tough enough to make cold work tools. The Chromium content in D2 2379 is 12% that is much higher than other steel grades used for hot work applications. Such high level of Chromium element in this steel grade allows polishing of it which optimizes corrosion and wear resistance of the tools during applicative use. Apart from this, presence of Vanadium (around 0.85%) further improves toughness and anti abrasion properties. Because of such physical attributes, D2 2379 is used in various orientations like for making blanking & forming dies, coin minting dies, thread rolling dies, stamping machine heads and whole range of cutting tools. D2 2379 is available in rounds, squares, flats and drill rods to match the above mentioned applications.

D2 2379 steel however requires well balanced heat treatment so as to keep the carburization levels under control; else the stated characteristics of it would be jeopardized! D2 2379 is an air hardened steel. It needs to be heated slowly up to 815 degree centigrade and further increasing to 1010 degree centigrade followed by air quenching. Annealing is done in the range of 871 – 898 degree centigrade & then furnace cooling is done. Tempering of D2 2379 is performed in 150 – 550 degree centigrade range.
